We are seeking a practical, hands-on Maintenance Assistant to support our Maintenance Manager in keeping our premises safe, well-maintained, and operating smoothly. This part-time role is ideal for someone semi-retired or looking for flexible work who enjoys varied, practical tasks and has experience in construction, engineering, building services, or general property maintenance. The role involves carrying out routine inspections, minor repairs, preventative maintenance, and helping maintain tidy, safe indoor and outdoor environments. Working independently as well as alongside the Maintenance Manager, the successful candidate will take pride in identifying issues early and ensuring small jobs are resolved efficiently.
The position begins at 12 hours per week across three days, with a clear opportunity to increase to up to 20 hours per week over time as responsibilities grow and the role develops.
Key Responsibilities
- General building maintenance and minor repairs (e.g., doors, hinges, locks, fixtures, basic carpentry etc)
- Basic plumbing tasks (e.g., changing taps, clearing minor blockages, resealing)
- Basic electrical tasks where permitted (e.g., replacing bulbs/tubes, visual checks, anything beyond this via qualified contractors)
- Painting, patching, and making good (walls, trims, small areas)
- Routine inspections and preventative maintenance checks
- Keeping external areas presentable (light grounds upkeep, litter picking, sweeping, gritting as needed)
- Identifying issues early and reporting/recording works completed
- Liaising with external contractors and supporting access as required
- Ensuring tools, store cupboards, and maintenance areas are kept safe and organised
- Following health & safety procedures and safe working practices
Skills & Experience
- Practical experience in construction, engineering, facilities, or property maintenance
- Able to diagnose issues and deliver sensible, cost-effective fixes
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
- Friendly and professional around staff/visitors
- Basic admin confidence (simple job log, texting/emailing updates)
- Full UK driving licence preferred (depending on site needs)
Desirable (but not essential)
- Trade qualifications (plumbing/carpentry/electrical/mechanical)
